Today is Giving Tuesday, and your feed will hopefully be clogged with people supporting nonprofits in their communities and around the world.
There’s a great article circulating about how to talk to your kids about giving – when you explain why you give, share how much you’ve been given. (read it here – it’s seriously so good.) The article can apply to businesses too – none of us do this on our own. At kittd, we’re incredibly grateful for the organizations that have helped us along the way.
First and foremost, we have to shout out to Junior League of Cedar Rapids, because that’s where we met, where we got to test out working together as volunteers, where we learned valuable skills to make us successful in business, and where we tested our products. Our JLCR sisters have supported us from the start, and we found our bank, our insurance agent, our video producers, our office and so much more through this incredible network of women. To find a Junior League in your community, go to www.ajli.org – we totally recommend it!
SCORE is an amazing free resource available to anyone wanting to start a business. They can provide information on business plans, financing, tax structures, and so much more. Thank you, SCORE!
We also relied heavily on the Cedar Rapids Public Library as we were getting our business started. We checked out a gazillion marketing & business books, utilized the free meeting space, and definitely enjoyed the coffee. Like Hermione Granger says, “When in doubt, go to the library.”
Within a month of incorporating as a business, we were lucky enough to be selected as contestants in a local “shark tank” style competition called “Invest in She,” coordinated by Iowa Women Lead Change. This was an amazing opportunity for a brand-new business, and it was awesome to see the community support women-owned businesses. Thank you, IWLC!
Teaching people to make beautiful things is an important part of our business, and we’re thrilled to partner with Kirkwood Community College and NewBo City Market(both local nonprofits!) to teach craft classes in the next few months. (if you want to make sure you don’t miss a class, sign up for our email list)
We’re also grateful for the many organizations who have approached us for donations! You might not believe it, but we love when we are approached to donate to auctions and fundraisers for nonprofits. It’s great marketing for us, and corporate philanthropy is one of our core values, so we love to practice what we preach. Look for kittd items at JLCR’s Butterfly Kisses and the American Heart Association of Eastern Iowa’s Hearti Gras in early 2016!
These are just a few of the many nonprofits that have touched our lives over the last year – please join us on Giving Tuesday and give where you live.
